WHY PRAY THE ROSARY?

Becoming Like Jesus

Certainly our objective in this journey to Heaven is to become holy men and women. This means becoming wholly like Jesus in every way, and includes every thought we think, every word that proceeds from our mouth, every action we perform, and every desire of our heart. It is on this journey to becoming wholly like Him that we enter more deeply into a relationship with the Most Holy Trinity. Love is the transforming agent which enables us to turn from our selfishness and focus our energy on loving Him alone, and expressing this by forgiving and loving others. It is in this all-absorbing exchange of love that we enter into the Mystery of the relationship of the Holy Trinity, and in this process of transformation that we truly come to know the heart of Jesus and Our Father. In essence, the purpose of the Holy Rosary is to know, love and serve Our Lord better by entering into a meaningful relationship with Him, which is rooted in heart to heart communication.  In this way, as we journey toward our Heavenly home attempting to answer the call to holiness, we take Jesus and Mary for our companions. The more time we spend in their presence trying to understand their virtues and the Mysteries surrounding their lives through the Holy Rosary, the more we can become similar to these models of Christian perfection in the way we live our lives.

Our task as Christians is not limited to becoming holy men and women alone.  It is our responsibility and privilege to carry on the work which Christ began for the salvation of all souls.  However, if we are to become effective witnesses for Christ as His recognizable presence in this world, we must first through His grace become transformed in virtue into His likeness.  Only then can we become light for a world that is becoming ever darkened by its enslavement to selfishness and sin.  The spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ, who offers truth and freedom from sin, is the Gospel message.  Praying the Holy Rosary teaches us how to evangelize the Gospel through our actions and words, by first helping us to internalize this Gospel message by forming Jesus Christ within ourselves.

Because becoming like Christ demands that we know Him first, the Rosary is invaluable because it can be a wonderful tool to help us to understand the Sacred Scriptures- through which God has revealed Himself to us in the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ.  He is the Eternal Word made Flesh; the one who fulfills and brings to life every word of the Sacred Scriptures.

Unceasing Praise of Christ Jesus

We learn from Sacred Scripture that all in Heaven praise Jesus Christ unceasingly.  It should be our goal then while on earth to prepare to enter eternity by praising Him unceasingly now in all that we do and say.  The Most Holy Rosary helps us to achieve this by the very nature of its prayers.  We praise Jesus in the Lordís Prayer, for establishing His Fatherís Kingdom on earth.  In the heart of the Rosary, we offer Jesus continual praise with and through Our Blessed Mother as we repeatedly pray the Hail Mary; for Jesus is the ultimate cause of the joy in the Angelic Salutation and the greeting of St. Elizabeth that make up the verses of this prayer.  We give Him unending praises as we conclude each decade of the Rosary with the Glory Be prayer, which glorifies Christ as the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity.

A Lethal Weapon Against Evil

One thing is very clear: Christ came into this world to annihilate evil, by conquering death and freeing mankind from the slavery of sin.  When Our Lord walked this earth He was continually faced with spiritual warfare and temptations from the enemy, which tried to thwart His salvation plan.  Even as He was dying, He was being tempted to come down from the Cross to prove He was the Son of God.  As Christians continue to carry out His mission for the salvation of souls by spreading the good news of the Gospel through our words and actions, we encounter the same resistance from evil.  We must remain vigilant in prayer if we are to defeat the very powers of hell.  And what weapon could be more lethal to overcome the enemy than praying the Rosary to meditate on the life and Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was the very means God chose to crush the head of the devil.  The greatest Saints have all chosen this weapon above all others to defeat evil in their lives, and rise to the heights of sanctity.

A Prayer For Peace

For centuries, the Holy Rosary has been a successful means to bring about peace in war torn countries, and even within families and troubled homes.  The effectiveness lies within the contemplation of Christ, and drawing close to the One who is the Prince of Peace.  When we pray the Rosary often we are blessed with the interior peace which can only come from communication with the Divine.  By encountering the living Christ we become shaped in His likeness, which empowers us with the necessary graces to bring peace and healing to others through forgiveness.  As we imitate His love amongst our families and friends, in our churches, schools and work places we begin to renew His spirit of peace in these places.  Eventually this has the potential to restore the face of the earth, that all may come to live in the peace and harmony that belongs to the Kingdom of Heaven.  It all begins one heart at a time, joining Our Mother Mary, Queen of Peace, and her Son, the Prince of Peace in the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary.

A Prayer For the Family

In an era where the structure of family life has been damaged by the selfish desires of a material oriented society, a great need arises for healing and peace within our homes.  Many difficulties arise in communication as family members spend less and less time with each other because work, television, internet and other outside concerns preoccupy them.  To practice devotion to the Holy Rosary together as a family counters this problem as it returns the focus of our daily life upon the love which flows from our Heavenly family. Harmony in the family life is created as we become filled with the peace and love of Christ.  As we draw down the graces and blessings of God upon our homes, patience with each other increases, wounds are healed through forgiveness and we are able to communicate with one another in a more loving manner. As the core of society, strong values and harmony in the family structure offers a solid foundation for hope and peace to a broken world.

Uniting Heaven and Earth

It gives Our Blessed Mother great joy to bring Saints to her Son as the fruits born from the suffering and sacrifice of His Passion.  This is achieved as sinners become saved on earth, and holy souls are released from Purgatory to receive their crown and everlasting beatification in Heaven.  We are called to play an integral role in this process through our prayers for the conversion of sinners, the reparation of hearts, and the release of the holy souls from Purgatory.  The Holy Rosary becomes a powerful means of intercession for Mary to accomplish this mission, as all of her children come together to share in her prayers and petitions.

Uniting Our Personal Prayers With Maryís

In the Most Holy Rosary we entrust ourselves entirely to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  It is within her Immaculate Heart that she tenderly bears all of our deepest desires, our sorrows, cares and concerns.  As we unite our hearts and voices with hers in prayer through the Rosary, she brings all of our needs to her Son and intercedes on our behalf before the throne of the Father.  Therefore, we should not feel an urgency to voice many personal intentions in this devotion.  Above all, we are to honor Our Blessed Mother by offering the prayer of our Rosary for her intentions.  As we do this, we trust that our most perfect and loving Mother always remembers all of our personal needs.  When we exchange our burdens and suffering for the merciful prayers of Our Mother, we begin to experience the promise of freedom and peace offered to us by Jesus.  This peace is a sure sign of the Reign of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus within us, which helps us to glorify our Father by becoming one with His Divine Will.
